Architecture governance should help delivery make better choices under pressure. If it only adds delay, paperwork or performance theatre, people will work around it.
Useful governance makes decisions easier to trust.
Delivery teams usually do not object to good challenge. They object to challenge that arrives late, asks the wrong questions or feels disconnected from the real constraints of the work.
Good architecture governance is different. It makes the decision visible early enough to matter. It asks for evidence that is proportionate to the risk. It helps people see whether the proposed route fits the organisation, the technology, the operating constraints and the future direction.
That kind of governance does not need to be grand. It needs to be clear, timely and useful. A short decision note can be better than a long pack if it shows the choice, the evidence, the trade-off and the next step.
The purpose is not control for its own sake. The purpose is to reduce drift, avoid avoidable rework and help delivery teams move with clearer agreement.
